My sister Torrey's Wedding to Hyrum

A couple weeks ago David and I took a trip just the two of us to Utah for my sister's wedding! Spending time in Utah was very special for me. We left our three boys back home and our cousin Trevin watched them for us. (While we were gone, Trevin sent "proof of life" photos as well as several photos of their adventures so that we wouldn't worry about our kids.) We stayed with David's sister who recently moved to north Provo area. The evening before my sister's wedding we had a family dinner where we all got to make toasts for Torrey and Hyrum and celebrate them. Torrey told me that my husband's toast for her was one of her favorites. I got to be there with Torrey and Hyrum in the Payson Utah Temple. I got to see family and catch up with old friends who have since moved to the Utah area. I loved being a part of Torrey's wedding and celebrating her and Hyrum meeting each other and being able to enter this next stage of life together and a married couple

We are Utahn's now!

We've moved to Highland Utah and are enjoying this new chapter of our lives here! We have discovered that Utah has lovely late summer/early falls. The weather is nice out each day and we are finding ourselves spending a lot of time outside. The kids ride bikes and scooters in the front yard in our cul-de-sac with the neighborhood kids. Our neighbors are warm and friendly. Now that we live on a flat street, Neil has learned how to ride a bike. We live near a paved bike trail called the Murdock trail that is amazing. We enjoy going to Neil's soccer games as a family. The doorbell rings every day with neighbor kids coming over to play. James was invited to his second-ever friend birthday party. Sending Christmas cards: How to address bulk letters using Excel and Word One joyful part of the holiday season for me is sending out Christmas cards. I learned that many people find sending them out a bit overwhelming, so I thought I’d share my strategy for addressing bulk letters using Excel and Word. First step is to create your list of people and addresses you want to include. I recommend creating an Excel spreadsheet* using the following fields: Nickname** Address1 Address2 City State Postal Code *I like to use Excel on OneDrive (Using the Cloud allows you to access your document anywhere, which makes adding updates to it throughout the year easy). Birthday month for the boys!

Something fun in our home is that our boys all have May birthdays. We loved celebrating their birthdays with them and their friends this year. We tried to make each child's birthday special. We also had a neighborhood community party!

James's Wish to Meet Buzz Lightyear at Disney World (Make-A-Wish)

This past week, we were able to celebrate James by going on a Make-A-Wish trip! In Disney World and Universal Studios, we experienced *preferential* treatment and spent a lot of time on rides and experiencing the magic (opposed to waiting in lines). We were explaining to my oldest son (6 years old) during the trip that we probably would not be able to do a trip like this with preferential treatment like we received again, and he thought about it a while before replying "Well, maybe I'll get cancer someday and we'll be able to go on another Make-A-Wish trip." (Kids are hilarious, we sure hope not!) During James's cancer treatment journey, we met with a social worker who gave us a referral to work with the Make-A-Wish team. Part of the process is figuring out what your child will enjoy best. The majority of young kids wish to visit Disney. We asked James if he would like to meet Mickey mouse, and he said "no," so David kept asking him about other characte

David spoke in Church today on Father's Day

David spoke in church today for Father's Day and I thought he did a wonderful job. Here is his talk: We have been a part of the Highlands Ward for a little over a year now, and I still feel as though I don’t know a lot of you. I think those of you who don’t know me yet, probably know me as the dad of the two-year-old with cancer, but to give a bit more of an introduction: My wife Marissa and I have lived in the area now for almost 10 years, previously in the Klahanie ward. We have 3 boys, Neil who is 6 and is excited to finish kindergarten next week, James who is 3 and is loving experiencing everything that he missed out on in the past year, and Isaac who is 1 and tries his hardest to be involved in everything that his older brothers are doing. As we all know, today is Father's Day and I am excited that this Father's Day is going to be a normal one at home spending time together as a family. A Year Post Cancer Discovery - Moving towards Normal Life

One year ago on June 2nd we learned that James had pediatric kidney cancer. Now he's better! This coming Monday James will visit Seattle Children's hospital for his three month post treatment checkup. Our family is deeply grateful to be able to turn to a new chapter as a family. About a month ago, David and I went to Hawaii just the two of us and had a great trip! We celebrated our 10 year anniversary and James being cancer free. We spent time on O'ahu and the big island. We did a lot of snorkeling and got to enjoy seeing coral, all kinds of fish, and sea life. We even found a sea turtle! For a portion of our trip we stayed with family and got to be leisurely toured around and entertained by them. It was delightful. After we got back from Hawaii, we celebrated our three boys' May birthdays. We've taken a lot of time to enjoy our kids and time as a family. James has Wilms' Tumors (Update 7)

Yesterday James came home from the hospital to continue recovering from his surgery. I love the photo above because it shows what good spirits James is in and what a trooper he is. A few weeks ago, the surgeon operated on James's left lung to remove tumors and this past Friday she operated on his right lung to remove tumors there. The pathology of the left tumors showed all the tumors as dead or scar tissue, meaning that the chemotherapy or the radiation killed the tumors. We are hoping to hear that the tumors removed on the right lung will also be dead, which we will find out sometime in the next week. If all goes well and according to plan, April 10 will be our last cancer day. James's counts in his blood continue to improve now that we have completed chemotherapy appointments, and we are looking forward to soon being able to socialize more normally again. After this milestone, we will have appointments every three months to look for cancer since his cancer and his treatment

Today is our 10-year anniversary! Here is the story of how we met: David and I met in Dallas Texas. It was the summer before our last year of college. I was interning with a consulting firm in the Seattle area and had the opportunity to work three weeks at another office. Here is the conversation I had with my mom, leading up to mine and David’s meeting. “Mom, I don’t want to go!” I complain as my trip to Dallas nears closer. “Why?” My mom replies. “Because I don’t know anyone there and it will be so boring. The other intern who is coming is married and he has a baby so he won’t want to hang out,” I explain. “You know I bet you’ll have a great time and make so many friends.” My mom replies. She helps me look up church times, helping encourage me to plug into the singles ward there. After some back and forth, she offers to call the bishop there and arranges a ride to church for me. She tells me, “You’ll get a text from your ride to church sometime tomorrow.” === In Dallas I get a ride

Honeymoon Part 1: Exploring the Ancient Mayan Ruins of Coba and Tulum

David and I just got back from our Honeymoon in Cancún, Mexico! During our stay by the Riviera Maya, we celebrated 1 year of knowing each other and took an excursion to Coba and Tulum, where we learned about the Mayans and their ancient culture. Hoop for ancient Mayan game The morning of our tour, I was surprised to find that the other family we would be touring with was from Bentonville, Arkansas and the dad worked for Walmart—where I interned a few years ago. His boss was also my old manager’s boss. It’s a small world, right? They were a friendly, super-nice Christian family, very similar to the other families I've met in Arkansas. At Coba the excavation site is huge, so we rode bikes on trails to each spot. Ancient Mayans played a game with hoops where two seven-player teams would try to get a ball through the hoop. The game not only looked ridiculously challenging, but pretty morbid—to honor the victorious team, the captain of the winning team was sacrifice
