In our post about the cost of having a baby I state that we spent about $3,000 on baby items (link). Below is an image of our breakdown. Some things to point out is that we spent almost $1,000 updating the nursery (link), but if we had a tighter budget, we probably could have been fine with just purchasing a secondhand dresser and placing it in the closet. That is why I think $1,500 to $2,000 is a reasonable range to play with, but maybe look at our list and make your own decision. I tried to distinguish a little between gifts we received and what we paid for out of pocket, but truthfully I felt uncomfortable putting prices on gifts we received and didn't know how best to handle that (we felt so grateful and spoiled by our family and friends). We believe many of our purchases were good buys, but of course some were not, so in some lines, we spent more to purchase what we ended up really wanting and on other lines we made sure to watch prices and purchase the item either secondhand or on a deal like black friday.
Back in July, David and I looked at homes as we considered moving here to Utah. One feature that was a little bit unique about our home we ended up picking, is that it has two primary bedrooms (one on the main floor and second one upstairs). We thought it would make sense for each of our three boys to have their own rooms upstairs (with us on the main floor), but that meant one of them would get the primary suite, which seemed a little much to us. We decided that our oldest son could have the big bedroom, but told him that he would need to share it when we have guests over. So far the arrangement has been working well. We were hopeful my parents (who still live in the Seattle area we left) would visit us often as well as my sister and her husband who currently live in Texas.
