PAX and Board Games

It can be difficult to find tickets, but thanks to coworkers snatching up extra tickets, Mr. D and I were able to attend PAX Prime 2015 this year.

First, what is PAX? PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) is a gaming convention. According to Wikipedia, “The first Penny Arcade Expo was held on August 28–29, 2004, in Bellevue, Washington, at the Meydenbauer Center, and was attended by about 3,300 people.” Now more than 70,000 people attend. The latest convention in Seattle was called PAX Prime 2015.

Mr. D attended three days and I just attended one of the four. We attended a handful of panels, demoed new games coming out in the coming year, and got to experience the crowds. On one of the days Mr. D attended he entered into a tournament playing a game that got it start on Kickstarter called SuperFight, won, and got a free copy of the game.

Here is a list of some of our favorite tabletop games:
  • Monopoly Deal
  • Settlers of Catan with the Cities and Knights expansion
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Splendor
  • Bang!
What are your favorite games?

  1. This year was a great year at PAX prime. I saw a lot of great indie video games up on the 6th floor and some pretty great AAA stuff on the main floor. As always if you attend PAX there are a few must to items to add to your adgenda. 1. Acquisitions Inc is an absolute must. If you don't know what it is, the TL;DR version is the founders of Penny Arcade, Patrick Rothfuss, and Scott Kurtz play D&D with Chris Perkins; hands down one of the funniest things I see in a given year. 2. The evening concerts. 3. The final round of the Omegathon.

Sean and Eunice's wedding celebration!

This past weekend we got to celebrate with our friends Sean and Eunice at their wedding! With help from our nanny, my brother and his wife, and a babysitter, we were able to trust that our kids would be okay back home for the weekend. Based on the photo below, can you guess what airport we flew to? We flew from Provo to Portland! I guess this carpet has been teased as very ugly and it was a trend a while back to take photos of your feet with the carpet when you pass through the Portland airport on social media. Most of the carpet has been replaced at the airport and the Portland airport has also been significantly beautified since.  We got to see many people we love. On Saturday before the meet and greet at the wedding, we were able to hike a section of the Pacific Coast Trail, a trail that goes thru the United States from Mexico to Canada ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Crest_Trail ) with our friend Dan.  The connection of us to Sean and Eunice and a subgroup of the g...

Outside and enjoying the sunshine

Our family recently crossed the 1 year in Utah mark. We've really enjoyed exploring the area and being outside. We love going on the Murdock trail near our home.  Recently our oldest, Neil, went on his longest bike ride ever (a 20 mile trip!) and rode from where we live in Highland down to the Lindon temple (and back home).  The boys love biking and scootering and visiting the various parks nearby. We've been really happy with our ebike (a radwagon) and this past summer added a couple escooters (secondhand segway ninebots). Hope you've had a great summer.
