Whale Watching near the San Juan Islands


A few months ago Mr. D's sister and family moved up here to the Seattle area. We have enjoyed spending time together and this past weekend went whale watching together with her husband and two boys. We were really grateful my parents were able to watch Neil for the day for us so that we could go.

During our trip we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day seeing several seals, a bald eagle, and also following a humpback whale for a little while. These whales can hold their breath under water for up to 20 minutes. We would see the spout of water when the whale would come up for air and sometimes we got a good glimpse at the tail as it went back in for a dive. Our tour guide shared with us that the difference between an island and a pile of rocks is the presence of trees-- if there are trees it is considered an island.
