What did baby James use during his first weeks?

James is nearly 3 weeks old! We have been enjoying getting to know him and introducing him to our family. Neil has amazed me with how loving, soft, and sweet he is with his little brother. Although it has been a little sad not being able to have visitors besides family, we are grateful to all be healthy and are especially grateful for the friends who sent me supportive text messages or dropped things by. We really appreciate our little village of help. Right now I have time to write this all because James is napping and my dad took Neil for us.

Something I thought could be fun to answer is: what did baby James use during his first weeks?

Changing:
  • Newborn diapers (hope to soon start size 1!)
  • Diaper wipes
  • Contoured diaper changer with cover
  • Diaper cream
  • Wipe warmer (new addition to make diaper changes more comfortable)
  • Nightlights (to see enough during diaper changes)
  • Diaper pail and plastic liner refills
Feeding:
  • Powdered formula
  • Several 4oz bottles
  • Bottle sterilizer, scrub brush, and soap
  • Size 1 nipples (and size premie for the first week while I was pumping/nursing)
  • Long spoons for stirring the formula
  • Two formula dispensers (easier to measure scoops beforehand)
  • Many burp cloths
  • Comfortable chair (and a couple pillows while I was trying to nurse)
Sleeping:
  • Bassinet with extra sheet covers
  • A few Swaddles/SleepSacks (nice to have spares for spit up)
  • A couple receiving blankets (usually laid on the ground for tummy time, but occasionally swaddled)
  • Baby monitor (we like one with video that we watch on the iPad)
Clothing:
  • Button jammies and onesies (organized Neil's old clothes into bins so that these were easy to find and reuse)
  • Soft hats (to keep baby warm)
Transportation:
  • Car seat (can't leave hospital without one, we have a cover with ours)
  • Stroller (double stroller with car seat adapter, will use more when baby is older)
  • Diaper bag
Baby Wearing:
  • Ring sling and Ergo baby (used a few times, will probably use more when baby is older, has more neck strength, and has longer awake times)
Bathing:
  • Infant tub
  • Towel and wash cloth
  • Baby shampoo
  • Fingernail clippers and nail file
Mom:
  • Comfortable leggings, nursing tanks, and big t-shirts (and pads and ibuprofen)
  • Pump and pumping supplies
I believe this is a fairly complete list of what we used. To log all the feedings and diapers, we used paper/pen for a couple weeks and then a spreadsheet on our phones. I also asked my pediatrician for a few baby book recommendations and purchased those. What did your baby enjoy their first few weeks? Anything you really loved?

Come visit us in Utah and stay in our Primary Suite

Back in July, David and I looked at homes as we considered moving here to Utah. One feature that was a little bit unique about our home we ended up picking, is that it has two primary bedrooms (one on the main floor and second one upstairs). We thought it would make sense for each of our three boys to have their own rooms upstairs (with us on the main floor), but that meant one of them would get the primary suite, which seemed a little much to us. We decided that our oldest son could have the big bedroom, but told him that he would need to share it when we have guests over. So far the arrangement has been working well.  We were hopeful my parents (who still live in the Seattle area we left) would visit us often as well as my sister and her husband who currently live in Texas. We added a king bed and have been using it to lure our family members into visiting us. We are pleased to share that we've gotten to host them several times. At Christmas we got a little creative with our extr...

We are Utahn's now!

We've moved to Highland Utah and are enjoying this new chapter of our lives here! We have discovered that Utah has lovely late summer/early falls. The weather is nice out each day and we are finding ourselves spending a lot of time outside. The kids ride bikes and scooters in the front yard in our cul-de-sac with the neighborhood kids. Our neighbors are warm and friendly. Now that we live on a flat street, Neil has learned how to ride a bike. We live near a paved bike trail called the Murdock trail that is amazing. We enjoy going to Neil's soccer games as a family. The doorbell rings every day with neighbor kids coming over to play. James was invited to his second-ever friend birthday party. Feel free to comment with what you like about where you live and your favorite things to do outdoors.

Sean and Eunice's wedding celebration!

This past weekend we got to celebrate with our friends Sean and Eunice at their wedding! With help from our nanny, my brother and his wife, and a babysitter, we were able to trust that our kids would be okay back home for the weekend. Based on the photo below, can you guess what airport we flew to? We flew from Provo to Portland! I guess this carpet has been teased as very ugly and it was a trend a while back to take photos of your feet with the carpet when you pass through the Portland airport on social media. Most of the carpet has been replaced at the airport and the Portland airport has also been significantly beautified since.  We got to see many people we love. On Saturday before the meet and greet at the wedding, we were able to hike a section of the Pacific Coast Trail, a trail that goes thru the United States from Mexico to Canada ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Crest_Trail ) with our friend Dan.  The connection of us to Sean and Eunice and a subgroup of the g...
